I love this time of year.. still warm enough that no jacket s needed but night are perfect for cozy shawls and playing with yarn... about the time of year I start wearing my fingerless gloves at night too.. I keep a pair in my car to year round.. great for grabbing a hot steering wheel..
with this in mind here are a couple of patterns to help enjoy this wonderful time of year..

The larger needle size makes these very quick and easy,great for last minute gift. The ribbing gives them enough stretch to fit a wide range of hand sizes. Beads add a bit of flare but are optional. 


1 by 1’s fingerless gloves 

Both gloves are made the same
Size 10 US dpns needles
Gauge 4.5 stitches by 5.5 rows per inch 
50 yards of sport weight yarn ( for both )
26 size 11 clear seed beads
k = knit
m1 = make new stitch by picking up bar between stitches and knit through the back loop
p = purl
1 by 1 ribbing = knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch, repeat. Always purling the purl stitches and knitting the knit stitches. Continue in this manner
** repeat instructions to end of round

Cast on 26 stitches using alternating knit one purl one long tail method after placing 13 beads on thumb side off cast on tail sliding beads in place with the purl stitches, join in the round

1 - 7 ) *1 by 1*

8 ) k1, m1, p1, *1 by 1*

9 ) *1 by 1*

10 - 13 ) repeat rows 8 and 9 twice more

14 - 16 ) *1 by 1*

17 ) Bind off 6 stitches in 1 by 1, *1 by 1* turn ( next few rows are knit flat )

18 ) *1 by 1* turn

19 ) *1 by 1* rejoin in the round knitting

20 - 26 ) *1 by 1*

Bind off in 1 by 1, weave in ends






mindless knit shawl

 I used worsted weight yarn as well as some fun fur and other novelty yarns

the needles were a size 11 US

cast on 5 stitches

1) k1, yo, knit to the last stitch, yo, k1

2 ) knit until the center stitch yo, knit center stitch, yo, knit to end

I kept knitting until I liked the size ..... this one was huge, felt like wrapping up in a cozy blanket ... I have since made them in all sizes.. smaller ones double quite well as a scarf

I will admit to putting in a bit of thought but not much lol...... I knew I would be using at lot of different yarns so to keep things even ( sort of ) I added the novelty yarns on the "wrong" side as well as the variegated yarn....
by even I mean, not all of the ends of the added in yarns were on the same side, there for the thickness that weaving the ends adds was on both edges.... in my latter shawls I started to join my yarns instead of weaving in.. so much easier and only two ends to deal with :) see post with video on fast way of joining yarn here not my video but love this method used it often. Work the last stitch of a row before yarn change.. cut yarn very close to end of stitch.. remove stitch and join new yarn.. your new yarn should start at the end or middle of the stitch.. done.. no extra weight, join is hidden in stitch... if you don't mind change overs mid row join before you start to knit shawl ... making the change over random can result in some very interesting projects...  

Redheart Ombre

                          Been looking forward to playing with the new Redheart yarns for some time now.. having seen the emails about them for ages .. I have been checking our local stores every time I go shopping, as if I wouldn't hit the yarn isle otherwise lol.. finally one store had some labels on the shelves..   the store stocked one color only .. and only a few of them .. I got one skein of True Blue Ombre ..  took another couple of weeks before they stocked more..

love the smooth color changes from light to dark and back again in the same color hue. It is soft but not a big fan of the loose weave of it.. not bad enough to stop using or not get it again though.. I did find one knot.. however it was well placed color wise..  never missed a beat.. all in all I am happy with it..

I made my first pineapple shawl with it.. ran out before the trim ( using just one skein ) I wasn't sure if I wanted the trim to begin with.. the edging of the pineapples is so pretty as it is..

I used the pineapple peacock shawl free pattern on Ravelry ( link below ), the pattern calls for bulky yarn but worked well with worsted weight, I used the same hook size called for.. bit looser stitches also worked well .. I found it to be easy to follow

Right now I am playing with Spearmint and the virus shawl.. The weave is tighter and the yarn a bit thinner, easier to work with.. colors are great .. all in all love it

next up will be something made with the violet color way.. this skein is even tighter woven and thinner.. still loving the colors..

I have been wanting to do a Virus shawl for some time now.. put everything on hold to give it a go .. I used Lions Brand Mandala in Phoenix, with a H/5.00mm ... love it.. so easy to remember the repeats .. will be making more of these ... the yarn is a new favorite as well

                                                  I love this pattern.. fun and free yippee...
 I used Lion Brand's Mandala in Valkyrie .. totally love the look.. only problem is I started to run out of yarn before the last repeat of 4 rows was done.. not wanting to give up the length or color change up.. I skipped the 3rd row repeat and added an row of trebles instead of dc's .. kept the over look of the pattern going.. Think I might end the next one with trebles as well.

There are times when you want to make things without a lot of thought.. well at least there are for me lol..... a few years back I started make these shawls.. lost count on how many long ago .. I needed to try the new Lion's Brand Mandala ... fell for their color ways hard.. got just one..

thinking I could just make one scarf size I started out.. then I came across just one more... in another color way on sale.. half price..  at this point I was liking how it was working up so much I didn't want to stop, so I grabbed it up thinking about half of the colors would work nicely but the other colors not so much.. I did me some cutting.. kept the darker colors and later added them to another skein I got on clearance.. I thought it was a pretty good match up

 I then came across just one skein of the first color way I used .. all at the same store.. at this point I am thinking what a mess their store room must be to keep coming up with these one at a time lol.. but half price no way I could pass on it.. so now it must become a large shawl.. scarf be damned ;) ..

 

I love the look of it .. the super soft feel of the yarn.. the drape ( used a 10.5 needle so a bit larger then called by the yarn maker ) ..

 

a day after getting the last skein my mom comes by with two more for me.. full price :( .. I happened to go back to the store the next day and the rest of them were marked down.. got me a few more lol.. thinking more shawls are on the way :D

shawl pattern idea mindless knit

super easy reversible wrap

I’ve been so busy lately knitting time was limited to a few minutes a day if I was lucky…..I just didn’t have any time to work out a new pattern…
So I went with another mindless knit ….a super easy reversible wrap, mostly straight stitch with knit rows on the ends and two by two edges.
I used almost 2 full skeins of Caron’s Simply Soft in soft green. I love the feel of this yarn when it’s all knitted up, but it can be a bit of a pain as it splits easily. That did take away from the mindless knit part a bit lol but I do love how soft it is :D

Gauge really doesn’t matter, that said my was 3.5 sts. By 4.5 rows per 1 inch in straight stitch ( stocking stitch )
Size 10 US straight needles
Approximately 620 yards of worsted weight yarn
21 inches wide by 63 inches long

Cast on 75 stitches

1-5 ) knit

6- 255 ) 2 by 2 ribbing first 6 stitches than straight stitch to last 6 stitches 2 by 2 again so
First ( p1, k1 )x 3 knit to last 6 stitches ( p1, k1 )x 3
Next row ( k1, p1 )x 3 purl to last 6 stitches ( k1, p1 )x 3 placing a marker after the first 6 stitches and before the last 6 makes it even easier.

256- 260 ) knit bind off

Shoulder Cape

I wanted to make a cape that was warm, but left ones arms free to move so one could still do crafts.....

I made this pattern a while ago, I forgot to get a yardage count on the edging....I've been meaning to remake it, to get the count and do a test knit......don't see having the time to do it anytime soon.....I did use less than half of a skein of Red Heart's super saver yarn......if that helps
It just turned out so comfy I still wanted to share it :D

 

                                                       

Shoulder Cape

Size 10 US circular needles 

Gauge 4 rows by 3 stitches per 1 inch approximately 

278 yards bulky weight yarn

Half skein of Red heart’s worsted yarn  

I used size 11 seed beads strung along the bottom, and a few antique beads sewn on to the trim ( see photo ) this is optional 

one button and size you like

K = knit

Kf/b = knit into the front and back of the next stitch

K2tog = knit 2 stitches together

Pm = place a stitch marker 

Psso = pass slid stitch over

P = purl

P2tog = purl 2 stitches together

Sl 1 = slide one stitch  purl wise

Tbl = through the back loop 

Yo = yarn over needle

*  * = repeat instructions between as many times as indicated 

Notes

It is very helpful to use a different color or type of marker for the center stitch as well as for each side of the cape. It makes the increasing much easier to not only spot, but also to know if you should be increasing  “before or after” the marker. Always be sure to slide your markers along as you work until indicated. You can use small pieces of scrap yarn as markers, just tie them into a loop. You need 4 on each side and 1 for the center.

Cast on 60 stitches with main color

1 - 5) knit to end

6) k4,  pm,  kf/b,  k12,  pm,  kf/b,  k2,  pm,  kf/b,  k8,  pm,  kf/b,  pm using different color( center stitch ),  kf/b,  pm,  k8,  kf/b,  pm,  k2,  kf/b,  pm,  k12,  kf/b,  pm,  k4

7) k4,  purl to the last 4 stitches,  k4

8) * knit to first marker slide marker, kf/b * repeat 3 more times, knit to center stitch marker ( there are no increases around the center stitch marker ) knit to one stitch before marker,  kf/b,  continue in this manner until last four stitches, k4

9) k4,  purl to the last 4 stitches,  k4

Repeat rows 8 and 9 until you have 156 stitches on your needles ( 12 repeats )

Remove stitches markers # 2 and 3 on the first half and # 7 and 8.

Continue in the same manner as before ( doing 4 increases instead of 8 per repeat ) until you have 212 stitches ( 14 repeats )

Lace Trim

Change to trim color

Knit the lace section on the loose side, you might want to go up a needle size if having trouble with tension. 

1 & 2) Repeat rows 8 and 9 from main body of pattern

3) k4,  *yo,  k1 tbl,  yo,  sl 1,  k1,  psso,  k5 * repeat to last 4 stitches,   k4

4) k4, * p4,  p2tog tbl,  p3 * repeat to last 4 stitches,   k4

I placed the button a bit low, instead of at the collar.....I made a simple crochet  chain stitch loop to slip over the button.

I needed to do a mindless knit....

I grabbed the first yarn I came across in my odds and ends bag ( larger sized scraps and yarn without any plans ) ......when that ran out I grabbed more...... same with needles, used the ones that happened to be in the bag......

no counting, no gauge, no anything, just knitting.......

I put a marker in the center stitch to make things nice and easy....

did 2 increases in each row, stuck to the ends and middle

I stayed with a simple yo

no cares at all

Masters Prayer Shawl

I made this for our reiki master/teacher/instructor, a prayer shawl. Hence the name lol

The main body is made top down, in stocking stitch with the increases down the center and edges.

She likes horses so I used the horse shoe stitch for the trim, upside down to keep the luck in ;) plus a few rows of knit stitch.

I used Caron’s Simply Soft Shadows in Dark Moss, while I loved the colors and feel of it, I was not happy with all the knots and "off" spots of yarn.

When I got the yarn I fell for the colors, and they did look good on her, but had I known how many breaks there would be in just four balls I would have picked something else.

After deciding on a pattern and having little time to redo anything, I stuck with getting more of the same yarn even after both of the first two balls had a break. The third and forth had 4 breaks EACH.

So after a lot of wasted yarn and lots of weaving in ends, I can not say for sure how much yarn I used :( having also run out of time I forgot to take the last measurement, I believe the measurement below to be a close estimate.

All in all the look and feel of the yard did work. I don't think I'll run out to get more though.
