Easy scarf?

Awhile back I was gifted a couple skeins of Lion Brand Homespun Tartan stripe

one skein was untouched the other had a couple of yards rewrapped around the outside of it...
I have always liked the soft, thick, richly colored yarn, was definitely happy to have more

I had used it many times before. while knitting

I now see why so many crocheters grow frustrated ..
after trying to make what should have been a super simple scarf..

I wanted a scarf with nice a drape, a bit thicker than knit

I like the look and feel of half double crochet ( American terms ) scarfs . plus the mindlessness of making them is a nice stress reliever..
I knew a larger hook was called for as a larger needle works up so much easier . didn't think I would end up with P 11.50mm though lol
Started with a K hook, after awhile gave up, too hard to see the stitches.. they just blended in to the point I couldn't easily tell if I was going through the top loops or not having to feel out every stitch.. not exactly mindless work ..
tried L next easier to see the stitches.. but after a bit it was clear the drape wasn't what I wanted.. frogged again..
I considered going with a different yarn but the colors are perfect .. the shot of the skeins is without any natural light.. the other two were taken in full sunlight.. either way beautiful

Finally I ended up going with the P hook.. I own one but have never actually made a project with it before..
I love the end result the drape is relaxed not too thick but will be cozy warm and I finally got my easy scarf, and it worked up faster than expected.. sweet

255 yards of bulky ( 6 ) yarn
Hook size P 11.50mm
Gage isn't essential to this project however five stitches equals 3.5" by four rows equals 3"
My finished scarf is 8 inches wide and 82 inches long
Written in American terms
Ch= chain
Hdc= half double crochet

1) Ch 16, hdc into second ch from hook, hdc 14, ch 1 turn

2) Hdc 15, ch 1 turn
Repeat row 2 until desired length is reached, fasten off, weave in ends

Super easy .. when you get the hook size right lol

Weaving sticks

Awhile back I came across some weaving sticks in an outlet store.. while they looked neat, I couldn't see parting with the $12.00 ... on clearance..
I walked away with some nicely priced beads and didn't give it another thought.. well sort of... after getting home I told hubby about them.. he said go back and get them...

sure why not..... at least look again....
after all it is right next to Joann's craft store, so at some point I would be right there ;) .. came home with a stunning rose quartz piece that was begging to come home... along with the beautiful Amethyst I couldn't set down..

Third trip some time after that....same out come.. the stones were still calling..

Went back one last time and yep you guessed it... still came home with more stones instead of stick's..
what can I say they really wanted to come home with me... and felt so nice...
and were way less than the sticks to boot ... altogether ...
by then the sticks were sold out... after that trip so were the stones ;) .. they are all quite happy here

Fast forward a few weeks... I am working on the tapestry loom my guys made for me to practice embroidery on yarn and or with yarn..
faster than knitting a pair of fingerless gloves with more space.. not as easy to mess up etc.....

btw those gloves are still in the works, my skills are getting closer to what I want,
however now is not glove weather, well maybe driving gloves.. steering wheel getting a tad warm these days..  oh wait that's another story........
anyhow they are on the back burner for now..

at that point I recalled those sticks.. I needed to make a set.. why didn't I think of that ages ago lol

I had been given a packet of these bamboo sticks along with some craft supplies years ago.. they looked useful but had no clue what to do with them..

They are smaller than the ones I had seen and much more to my liking in price lol... now to make a set..

The points are not needed.. these are just what I had on hand
6 inch dowel sticks work great ( or cut longer ones to size wanted, I found this size easy to hold on to )

 got my tools together ...

be mindful to place in secure holding before attempting to drill..

safety glasses are a must also.. take my word on this.. oh and watch out for smoke.. no clue they could light up so fast...
the holes are 1/2 inch from the bottom of the sticks, I wanted a bit of length to help guide the weaving over the yarn that goes through the sticks..

side note ... I have seen some sticks with little eyelet screws on the bottom but felt the possibility for the weaving to stick would rise, I'm sure they would work with some thought put into the works.. but I wanted mindlessly easy here.. something that could be done while chatting or walking along

these are the finished product ... after a good sanding of course

After giving them a try I added a few more

And a few more..

These are so much fun, super easy..

to start to weave a length of yarn twice the length need, plus about 6-8 inches for tying off ( longer for fringe ), through each stick,
you can put a loose knot at the end of each or tie them loosely together to keep things in place..
put a slip knot around the first stick and start weaving up the sticks..
as they fill up side them down on to the yarn threaded through the sticks ( this is call your warp yarn )

be careful to keep a bit of weaving on the sticks to keep things looking smooth..
when you get to the size wanted slide all the weaving down even out among the warp yarn..
tie off.. you can weave the ends in or leave as fringe

I am going to use the pieces I made to hang earrings on at market.. come cooler weather I plan on making scarfs.. and such..

Another go at textured scarf

I really like the lemon peel stitch.. really gives a nice over all look so easily .. wanted to give it another go.. in the future I am sure this this will be coming up again lol

This scarf is hade using the same amount of stitches ( link to pattern below ) as the last.. I changed the hook to a H8/5.00 mm..
quick side note so loving my Susan Bates hooks for loose yarn like this especially

I was going through my yarn bins, when I came across a item I had set aside, as it didn't suit the person I was planning on gifting it to.. a bit dishearten, I just set it aside never finishing it.. such pretty yarn needed another go.. took less time to frog than I was expecting..

I love the way it came out.. supper soft .. the drape is so light and flowing.. this stitch was perfect for it.. I used Red Hearts Boutique Unforgettable in Parrot.. the yarn has since been discontinued sadly.. Their new line of Unforgettable is thicker but just as soft.. might give that a go soon..

Textured crochet scarf

First post of the new year wow time is flying.. as always we have been keeping very busy.. started going to the big farmers and crafts market in town.. about 300 vendors, even on slow days there are hundreds of people shopping.. love the change up.. costs more to set up of course but so far has proven to be worth it.. been crocheting and knitting over 10 hours a day to keep up.. not leaving much time for crafting for myself, writing down the patterns I am making or even blogging updates..
got me a head cold now.. have no choice but to slow down.. so what do I do with my off time.. that's right play with yarn lol

a sale on Premier's Sweet Roll yarns.. less than half price after taxes... lead me to grab a few..

I have only used one of the four I picked up at this point, this is what I found...

not a foot into it was the first knot, thankfully only one other

I wasn't really happy with the color change overs.. nothing smooth about it at all..

blotches of color through out, only one large one, rest were only a stitch or less long..

the yarn was very easy to work with.. soft but not fraying soft.. no splitting at all.. nice stretch, bounced back well, good thickness, worked up fast, easy to frog if need be ;)

over all wasn't real hot on the color changes ups even though I like the colors themselves,
I liked working with the yarn ... minus the knots..

for a first try of the yarn it wasn't anything that would get me to buy more..
however who knows, the next few cakes may hold another story.. never judge a yarn by one skein alone
Right

This is the out come, even with the issues I like the feel and fun look of it

Color pooling scarf

Part 1
color pooling scarf

Talk of color pooling has been every where for some time now.. I love the look ut never got around to trying..
Came across some clearance yarn the other day.. $1.50 for a skein of Red Hearts Super Saver in Earth and Sky color way..

I love the way it looks so far..
Although I would not do the purl on each end next time.. tends to curl along the edges.. thinking a black edge will make the colors pop however so I'm not frogging.

I cast on 37 stitches using a size 8/5.00mm needle ( long tail )
knit the first row
purl one, knit one to the last stitch, purl one, repeat these two rows
nothing else to it ..
Will update as soon as I get the edging done

Infinity scarf

Very easy, quick knit, great for last minute gift giving..

I was watching tv a few nights ago and saw this really cool infinity scarf ( a old Twilight Zone )... and decided to make a few..... looked like it was made with size 1 or 2 needles very wide and long, fingering weight... loved it and maybe some day I'll have the time to make one just like it, but with Christmas right around the corner... now is not that time lol
I still thought it cool enough to give it a go... using much thicker yarn and needles I was able to make 2 so far and a few other things... I did like how long it was.. long enough to wrap around the keck / head or let hang in front like a traditional scarf...

gauge is not essential for this project

any sized cable needles will work but the larger sizes will speed things up, I used size 15 US

same goes with the yarn any size will work ( as long as you adjust your cast on number and needle size accordingly ) for the first one I used 2 strains of Playful by Yarn bee, Glittering Ombre ... the yarn is discontinued now but I had it in my stash and the colors worked...

The one in playful I cast on 128 stitches, joined in the round being careful not to twist them

knit 2 rows
purl 1 row
I repeated these 3 rows until I got the thickness I wanted... I think I did 3 repeats.. bind off weave in ends..

it's about 5 inches wide and 30 long

Using Yarn bee's Icelandic Jewels in Black Pearl
I cast on 150 stitches join twisting the cast on stitches twice
I did 30 rows in knit stitch as I wanted it to curl in... showing the purl side
this one is about 9 inches wide and 34 inches long
