Thumb
Pick up the stitches, using size 6 needles, for the thumb by carefully removing the scrap yarn and placing the stitches on dpns as you do so. It’s easiest to use 2 dpns one for the top and one for the bottom rows. Rearranging onto 3 needles as you knit the first row.
1 ) Knit to the end of the bottom row of the thumb stitches, m1, knit to the end of the top row, m1, join in the round
2 ) k9, k2tog x 5
Bind off, weave in ends.

I'm having trouble at row 28. I put the 8 stitches onto the scrap piece of yarn to hold them for the thumb. Then it says to slide them back on to the last needle? This isn't making sense to me. Please help!

Eileen,
after sliding the stitches back onto your working needle you knit them..
keep working the pattern until done with the upper part of the warmer.. after that you remove the scrap yarn placing the live stitches on dpns… and work the rest of the thumb
