Quick crochet hat

Using Red Heart Super saver ( worsted weight ) in dark blue and a size K us hook...

( this pattern can be made using any size hook and corresponding sized yard by just adjusting  increase rows to fit size needed, it also works well with the half double crochet stitch for a thicker hat )

chain ( ch ) 4 join with a slip stitch to from a ring, chain 2, double crochet ( dc ) until the ring is full ( not bunched up though ) in this one I did 13

join each round with a slip stitch and start the next with a ch 2 ( counts as your first dc )

the second round dc into the same space as your starting chain 2 ( counts as your first increase ),  dc twice into each stitch

third round increase in the same manner as last round, dc 2,  increase the next stitch, dc 2 repeat your increase followed by 2 dc's to the end of round

fourth round do the same as the last round with 3 dc's in between increases ( if any extra rounds are needed just add another dc in between increases for each round )

I found this to be big enough to fit ( most ) adults without adding any more increase rounds using the larger need size

from here I just dc in every stitch for each round... this one I did 7 more rounds of dc's... stop when you get to the size you want.. add a few extra rounds to made one that can fold up along the brim

Added note... if after any given round you find you just need the hat a bit bigger .. try just adding a few increases evenly across the round..  depending on size needed I've found that either 4 or 6 more stitches work nicely

Super thick and easy fingerless gloves ( crochet )

I wanted a pair of supper thick fuzzy fingerless gloves to wear over thin gloves ( or alone )... the quicker the better... these only take a few minutes to make and are very warm, because they only cover the hand they are still easy to move in even though they are so thick... by adding or removing the number of dc's for the thumb gusset and rows before and after they are easy to adjust size...
I used two colors of Yarn Bee's Luscious ( bulky weight ) and one of Redheart's super savers ( worsted weight) I didn't count yardage but it didn't take much...

Medium ladies size

Make 2

Size N US hook ( didn't bother with gauge, adjust hook as needed )

using 3 strains of yarn through out ( 2 of bulky, one of worsted weight )

chain 16, join with a slip stitch

chain 2, double crochet 15, join with a slip stitch into top of chain 2

chain 2, double crochet 15, join with a slip stitch into top of chain 2

chain 2,  double crochet 4 times into the base of the chain 2 just made ( thumb gusset ), double crochet 15, join with a slip stitch into top of chain 2

chain 1, skip the 5 thumb gusset stitches, join in the next stitch with a slip stitch, chain 2, double crochet 14, decrease in next stitch with stitch over thumb gusset

chain 2, double crochet 15, join with slip stitch, fasten off, weave in ends.

Infinity scarf

Very easy, quick knit, great for last minute gift giving..

I was watching tv a few nights ago and saw this really cool infinity scarf ( a old Twilight Zone )... and decided to make a few..... looked like it was made with size 1 or 2 needles very wide and long, fingering weight... loved it and maybe some day I'll have the time to make one just like it, but with Christmas right around the corner... now is not that time lol
I still thought it cool enough to give it a go... using much thicker yarn and needles I was able to make 2 so far and a few other things... I did like how long it was.. long enough to wrap around the keck / head or let hang in front like a traditional scarf...

gauge is not essential for this project

any sized cable needles will work but the larger sizes will speed things up, I used size 15 US

same goes with the yarn any size will work ( as long as you adjust your cast on number and needle size accordingly ) for the first one I used 2 strains of Playful by Yarn bee, Glittering Ombre ... the yarn is discontinued now but I had it in my stash and the colors worked...

The one in playful I cast on 128 stitches, joined in the round being careful not to twist them

knit 2 rows
purl 1 row
I repeated these 3 rows until I got the thickness I wanted... I think I did 3 repeats.. bind off weave in ends..

it's about 5 inches wide and 30 long

Using Yarn bee's Icelandic Jewels in Black Pearl
I cast on 150 stitches join twisting the cast on stitches twice
I did 30 rows in knit stitch as I wanted it to curl in... showing the purl side
this one is about 9 inches wide and 34 inches long

my take on Salisbury steak and baked potatoes

This post has been edited on 11/18/14
I forgot to add one ingredient to the Salisbury steaks... green chillie.. I was pretty tired is all I can..
they can be made with out them but around here it's a must in most dishes lol

I love getting dinner ideas from friends and web posts.. this one was inspired by a few posts and chatting with friends..
one friend shared a photo of her dinner that include mushroom gravy... loving the stuff and not having it in awhile I started to plot out a dinner menu that didn't include my usual main dish for mushroom gravy.. steak ..  my jaw is still giving me issues from cracking it in a fall a while ago.. I have been adding more foods to my diet again but there is no way I can eat steak yet, truth be told we don't eat much red meat even when all is going good... but that mushroom gravy sounded too good to pass up.. the deal I found on jarred mushrooms at the dollar store didn't hurt, even though I normally use fresh..

not long after the gravy photo was shared... a slow cooker Salisbury steak recipe was shared .. followed by a talk at a party of baked potatoes...

To start off I pre -cooked whole washed and pierced potatoes in a pot of water with a good amount of garlic and some sea salt... after they get almost tender enough to poke to the center with a fork.. I wrap them in aluminum foil lightly coated with both garlic powder and sea salt... bake until done at a medium heat ( 350 )

not having a large slow cooker, I decided to go with pan frying my own recipe of Salisbury steaks..

about five pound of ground round or low fat hamburger, one box of turkey stuffing, low sodium type ( cuts down on the red meat ), 3 fresh eggs, about a pound and a half of medium heat chopped green chillie a bit of onion and garlic powder to taste ... mix together and let set for a few minutes before pressing into patties.. cook over a low heat covered, turning as needed until done ( lightly browned ).. this makes over a dozen good sized patties... I only used one pan layering them and repositioning top to bottom as needed, draining the grease as I did so

for the gravy I used a 32 oz. box beef stock ( low sodium and MSG free ) with about half a box of added water and heated to almost a boil.. added a bit of cayenne powder, sea salt with a touch both garlic and onion powder...  some flower to thicken it close to the texture I wanted.. then a touch of corn starch.. until thickened to liking, in a separate pot from patties  ..

by adding the garlic powder ( not garlic salt ) in the start of cooking you get a nice mild flavor.. ( I use a mix of iodized sea salt and Himalayan pink sea salt )
some frozen veggies on the side and it was a huge hit...

it was such a big hit no one minded having leftovers the next night, I placed the patties in a glass baking dish with the gravy smothering it, covered.. on the top rack of the oven, with the potatoes still in foil on the bottom rack at a medium to low heat.... we had run out of frozen veggies so we sliced a few freshly ripped tomatoes ( taken off the vines while still green before the first freeze ) and sprinkled the with parsley flakes and white vinegar.. another take on a wonder recipe shared by a good friend who is a great chef ...

I forgot to take a photo before starting as it too hard to wait having already tasting it the night before lol

Pylmouth yarn free hat pattern

A friend asked if I could make a hat like this.. turns out this is a free pattern from Plymouth Yarn... while I would have liked the pattern to include the increases instead of just increase evenly until such and such number of stitches, it does make a nice hat..
the pattern can be found here at Plymouth Yarn

Drangonfly free crochet pattern

I have this thing for dragonflies... I live in an area where I'm lucky enough to see them almost daily during warm weather... we get many visitors in our home ( each carefully returned to the outdoors ) of many sizes and colors ... after watching them fly around my work table a while back I decided to make a few crochet ones... I gave away the first few before I took a photo ... so I just had to make a few more :D

I used floss ( the type used to make friendship bracelets ) with a size B1 2.25mm hook

I make the body and wings separately and seem the wings on... for stiffener I use Mod Podge brand, and add one coat of Puffy Paint in silver glitter

I like to use 3 colors but I'm sure they would look great with one or two...

ch = chain stitch
dc = double crochet
hdc = half double crochet
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
tr = triple crochet

Body
chain 15
in second chain from hook sl st, sl st 6, sc 6, in last chain sc 2, hdc 1, sc 1, hdc 1, sc 2, fasten off, weave in ends before adding wings.

Note : Leave tails on wings long enough to seem them to the body... weave in end on the back side of each wing.

Top wings, make two
ch 15
sl st 1 into second chain from hook, in the following chain stitches, sc 2, hdc1, dc 3, tr 1, dc 3, hdc 1, sc 2, fasten off

Bottom wings, make two
ch 11
sl st into the second stitch from hook, in the following chain stitches, sc 2, hdc 1, dc 2, hdc 1, sc 2, sl st 1, fasten off

seem wings on using photo as guide, pin in place before adding stiffener... attach to hair clip or pin

More crochet drawstring bags

I just love little bags... they are so much fun to make, have so many uses... can be worn around your keck on your belt, hang in your car or any place for that matter... I charge many with reiki energies, by doing so you can send reiki to some one by writing down their name on a slip of paper and placing it in the bag... charge crystals or other small items...
I'm planning on selling a few these reiki charged bags at a up coming fair. I've been making them out of many types of yarn. So far this is my favorite pattern for crocheting them... they can be made in any size by adding more increases at the start of the pattern as well as adding rows...

here is the basic idea...

single crochet 8 times in a magic circle, slip stitch join

chain one, single crochet into base of last stitch, single crochet twice into each stitch

(    if a larger bag is wanted
*single crochet twice into next stitch, single crochet one stitch* repeat to end
*single crochet twice into next stitch, single crochet two stitches* repeat to end
*single crochet twice into next stitch, single crochet three stitches* repeat to end     )

single crochet all stitches until you reach the size you like

to make the area where the drawstring is threaded through do a round of twisted double crochet join with a slip stitch

chain two, *single crochet, chain one* repeat to end slip stitch to join and fasten off.

I made a simple chain stitch cord for the drawstring, weave it through the space created by the twisted stitches
I added beads to some charms to others :)

these are very similar to my other drawstring bag crochet pattern.. the difference being the way the area for the drawstring is constructed...
you can find that pattern here

Friends free tea candle cozy pattern

A friend of my has been crocheting for sometime now but never wrote down any of her patterns until now... it's a garden tea candle cozy, although I thought of other uses while making mine ( shown in photo )... my son is always starting new plants in jars this would make a nifty way to hang them... of course I thought it would be a cool way to hang needles as well lol

portabella mushrooms

We came across some nice looking portabella mushrooms at a good price not long ago ( less than I could have made beef patties for )... at that point I had only tried making them twice... broiled and grilled both times using others recipes

this time I decided to do my own ... I cut some fresh herbs adding a bit of balsamic vinegar into olive oil... let that sit a good hour or more.... I used it to coat the mushrooms and some zucchini slices .. grilling all... when the mushrooms were almost done I added green chillie and cheeses...The guys raved about it for days...

after telling my mom about them she wanted to try them as she had made us a wonderful shrimp stir-fry the night before I was more than willing to see if we could recreate the dish... this time we used French bread instead of wheat ( mom's not a fan of wheat bread ) and we added some bell peppers, green tomatoes and potatoes on the grill as well, using the oil to coat everything except the potatoes, I put them in foil with sea salt, parsley and a bit of black pepper ... I'm so happy we were able to pull everything off the grill just as a heavy rain started.... everyone loved it.... think I'll be keeping this recipe lol

Cotton crochet sachet

I'm not a fan of canned "air fresheners"
I do love the smell of many herbs and flowers and making bags :D
with bits of end pieces of cotton I put this small very quick and simple
sachet together
for use in my car

I used a size H US hook and a few yards worsted weight cotton yarn... I put it on a hook style key chain with a button closure... it's made so it doesn't close tightly on top but can hold a couple of crystals while hanging from my dashboard..

this pattern can be made to any size you'd like using whatever hook and yarn you have laying around... just keep the stitches loose enough to let a bit of air flow through but not so loose the your crystals pop out :D

I chained a few stitches ( any number you like to get the width needed ) for the foundation, double crochet ( dc ) into the second chain from the hook, dc until you reach the first chair stitch, dc 3 times into that stitch going around to the other side of the foundation row, dc to the end of those chain stitches, dc into the last one 3 times... from there dc all stitches until you reach the size you want.. dc haft the stitches turn ( making sure you are at the start of a new round ), dc half of those stitches ( so 1/4 of over all stitches )  chain enough stitches to go around your button, dc to end of row fasten off.... if you'd like a longer flap add a few more rows of dc's before making the chain stitches for the button closure... weave in ends, sew on button, either make a chain cord to hang form or add a key chain hook... add a charm or 2... I added a silver feather to this one

Sari silk skirt/cover up

This is a Sari silk draw string skirt/cover up... a large rectangle... it's all double crochet stitches to the length ( about 14 inches ), after chaining to the width I wanted ( about 31 inches at the top and 36 on the bottom ) I started from the bottom and did a few decreases going up... used a size K US hook... took about 300 grams of yarn ( didn't get the yardage )... I made the draw string long enough to crisscross along the side opening...

Easy crochet dish cloths in the round

       cloths in photos are unblocked

Both cloths are made the same up until the shell round... I used a larger hook ( I ) with the reddish one and a few more increases

Size H US hook
32 yards of 100% cotton worsted weight yarn approximately ( less for the red one )
7 inches wide ( red 5 3/4 )
Exact gauge is not essential to this project

1 ) chain 4 join with a slip stitch to the first chain to form a circle
2 ) chain 2, double crochet 11 into the circle
3 - 4 ) chain 2, double crochet, increase 1.. keep stitches on the loose side
5 ) increase once into each stitch.... this is where I stopped the red one ( ran out of yarn lol )
6 ) double crochet into the next stitch 5 times, skip 2 stitches repeat to end, slip stitch into the top of the first shell and bind off... weave in ends

Drawstring bags

I picked up some yarn on clearance... wasn't sure what I was going to do with it but I'm a sucker for clearance sales especially when they are 50% off :) .... 2 them were from Lion Brand came with a pompom and pattern for a hat.... at $3. each I thought why not, looks fun

...until I checked out the web page and found the corrections... one skein would make a hat but only in small sizes for young children.. the pompom is about the size of a orange.. couldn't see putting that on a small child's hat and expect it to stay on the poor kid..
now I did have 2 skeins, I could have used it to make one hat but after reading the pattern I didn't like it... this wasn't sounding fun any more...
for me crafting is about fun.. I have fun making things... fun either gifting or selling them.. fun coming up with quick easy patterns I can share with others here on my blog... to make some thing I didn't find fun I can only imagine would leave it not feeling... well fun

So funky yarn plus fun factor... for me that turned out to be making a couple of drawstring bags with one of the skeins :D
The first is a simple straight stitch knit bag using size 5 dpns ( set of 4 )
cast on 9 place on 3 dpns join
1) knit front and back of all stitches
2) knit all stitches
3 and 4) as rounds 1 and 2
5 - 31) knit all stitches
32) knit 2 together, yarn over repeat to end
33) knit one, knit front and back of the yarn over stitch, repeat to end
34) bind off, weave strand of yarn through the yarn over openings for drawstring.

the second bag is a little bigger done in crochet.. with a shell stitch top

using a size G hook
1) single crochet 8 times in a magic circle
2) single crochet twice into each stitch
3) *single crochet twice into next stitch, single crochet one stitch* repeat to end
4) *single crochet twice into next stitch, single crochet two stitches* repeat to end
5) *single crochet twice into next stitch, single crochet three stitches* repeat to end
6 - 26) single crochet all stitches
27) chain one, skip one stitch double crochet 5 times into next stitch,    *chain one, skip two stitches double crochet 5 times into next stitch* repeat to end.. join in first chain stitch of round, fasten off.
I made a simple chain stitch cord with the yarn left over for the drawstring, weaving it into the bottom of the shell stitches

I didn't worry about gauge or counting yardage but the skein is 2.3 oz with 98 yards of medium weight

Still no clue of what to do with the rather large pompom.... maybe a cat toy....

Playing with crochet

I've been having so much fun playing with crochet :D A friend posted the original pattern of this dragon on FaceBook ... the free pattern ( Baby Dragon _ can be found on www.ravelry.com .... check pattern notes for corrections...
I loved the idea of making a dragon... I did change the pattern some...

the pattern as written would give you a very cute 5 inch tall dragon... as you can see in the photo Honey Dew came out much bigger :D I wanted his jaw to be a bit bigger on the bottom with a quirky smile... I've very happy with the way he came out :D
The original pattern has lots of photos making it very easy to follow :D

I did get one granny square scarf done so far...
I do have a lot more to use up.. Having a few issues with matching up my work with the squares I got from the thrift store... most are of slightly different sizes.. So the seaming shows.. I decided to "roll" with it and make it a pattern feature adding the same color trim :D

Along with the scarfs to give to charity I've been working on hats ... This free pattern is called Cool Stripes Beanie it can be found on either www.ravelry.com and www.redheart.com very quick to make with different sizing listed in the pattern.. I did change this up a bit as well, happy with the way it was written and all but wanted to use a different size of hook and weight of yarn...

Crochet headband with beads revisited

I picked up some cool beads on clearance the other day... light weight acrylic, great for adding to knit or crochet items... the 3 colored headband needed to be revisited the original pattern can be found here
crochet 3 color beaded headband

with this one I used 2 colors instead of three, using the same color for rows 1 and 3 ( still cutting the yarn for braiding ). I also changed the bead placement as these are bigger adding one every forth dc in the second row... I changed the last row a bit... fasten off the second row.. turn the headband so the right side is facing you and slip stitch through both loops to the end

Small Dish Cloth # 1

I find that large dish cloth though they work great for something do not work very well in tight spaces, like inside small glasses... I've been making just straight knit stitch ones for ages now but wanted to have a bit of fun with a few...

Granny Square Wrap

Awhile back I found this bag full of granny squares at a thrift shop... I love granny squares and being new to crochet I thought it would be good practice to make more squares and make a throw or whatever..

I got to work using up a lot of my scrap yarn :D

I decided I wanted a wrap... hey you can never have too many wraps and shawls lol

I did a single crochet stitch to join them length wise and sewed them from the back width wise... I added one and three quarter rows of single crochet trim with a shell stitch on the bottom edge.

I have many squares "left over" so they will become scarfs for those in need.
