patterns revisited

This year I remade a few patterns I had written in the past.

Dad loved them, he said he would wear them when he rides his bike. I made them in cotton this time, worked well. What didn't work was the photo. I can't seem to get a good photo of anything made out of black yarn :(
The other pattern I remade was the hat above. I used my http://barbsz-lifeisgood.blogspot.com/2009/06/mens-basic-relaxed-fit-hat-with.html hat for men downsized a bit. Mom had wanted a hat like the ones I've been making for the guys. I made it more frilly by using eyelash yarn around the edge and white cotton with gold metallic thread running thought it.

Penguin Can Cover / Wrist Warmer


This pattern assumes some knowledge of stranded and intarsia knitting.
The penguin is knit flat and seamed up the back later, with tail knit on after seaming. The wings and beak are knit up with the pattern by turning your work.
I used stranded knitting with the center ( white and yellow ), and intarsia with the black areas ( so I used two bobbins of black instead of carrying the black behind the white yarn. )
Size 6 US needles
29 yards worsted weight black cotton yarn
4 yards worsted weight white cotton yarn
2 yards worsted weight yellow cotton yarn
1 yards worsted weight blue cotton yarn
Gauge 4 sts by 6 rows
Kf/b = knit into the front and back of the next stitch
K = knit
K2tog = knit 2 stitches together
P = purl
P2tog = purl 2 stitches together
W = use white yarn to those stitches
Y = use yellow yarn to those stitches
Bk = use black yarn to those stitches

Knit and Cable Hand Bag

I came across this cable pattern in a Harmony Guide, and wanted to give it a try.

Knit and Cable Hand Bag

Knit flat, seamed up the sides with cabled flap. Hooks or snaps hold closed, with ornamental button.
5 ½ by 9 inches
Size 6 US needles
Cable needle
Yarn needle for seaming
105 yards worsted weight yarn ( pictured in Real Teal by Redheart )
Two snaps or hooks
1 button ( optional )

Button on center cable flap is ornamental and as such is
optional.

Inside Out Scrap Yarn Can Cover/Wrist Warmer

So I'll admit it, I hate to throw anything "useful" away. By useful I mean "by your wildest imagination some day you might have a need for it".


This stems from every time I do toss something I will need it days later, no matter how long I kept it around before hand.


This holds true for yarn as well. When I first started to knit, I ran across a site ( wish I would have bookmarked it ) where the person was talking about using their smaller scraps of yarn to make dog blankets out of. Just knotted the pieces together and knitted away. No photos, but it sounded cool.


Well turns out my dogs don't like knitted blankets, sweaters sure, but not blankets. The stitches catch on their nails.
No sooner had I gotten done with making a wrap

out of all my scraps last year ( saved them for more then a year ) when I started to make wrist warmers with after thought thumbs...... yeah, not one piece of scrap yarn to be had lol.


So here I am with a good size bag of scrap yarn again, when it hits me I want a fuzzy, knotted up can cover ( don't ask why, no clue ). I could use some and still have enough left over in case something comes up :)

Inside Out Scrap Yarn Can Cover/Wrist Warmer


So I took some scrap cotton and tied them together, leaving small tails I could brush out later. I used size 6 US dpns this time to tighten them up a bit. I tend to knit a little looser with all the knots and didn't want it to slide off.
Cast on 32 stitches, 2 by 2 ribbing for 20 rounds. Can be used either side out. The extra yarn of the tails really add to the coziness factor, and no weaving in the ends :) lol

Raven Tarot Bag

The Raven Tarot Bag is knit in one piece, no seams. It is started using the Eastern cast on ( optional ), then knit in the round until the cabled flap which is knit flat.

It's about 5 by 6 inches, fits my larger cards while wrapped in their cloth nicely.
I used size 6 US dpns ( set of five ), I've read that this cast on is easier with circular needles, I did not find it to be the case. I'm sure other toe-up cast-on's would work as well, I just find this one suites me. You could also seam the the bottom.

Cable needle
Gauge 4 ½ stitches by 7 rows per one inch
57 yards of worsted weight yarn

3 buttons, 2 smaller about ½ inch, 1 larger about 1 inch

Okay this is getting old

Last night as we were in the kitchen getting dinner ready, a few more odd things happened. Pans fell for no reason ( went quite far across the floor, 3 of us saw it ), things popping off shelves at DS#2, and while we were standing there talking DH got splashed with water, no one was near him or the sink. He was clearly wet across his face. This needs to stop.

So yesterday was a little odd, yeah I know again.
My sisters van broke down, yeah I know again lol, anyhow while she was here....
sitting in my living room chatting with her and my sons, out of the corner of my eye I see something dark poke DS#1 on the back, he jumped, my sister saw it and wanted to know what that grayish thing was. I have no clue, but it's got to go. Any ideas????

All their lives we've heard "are they twins".
Until this photo we never saw it.

Snow in Las Cruces???

I've said this before.. I don't like cold..... not in the least little bit. So we move to one of the sunniest places we could find and not be cooked alive ( lived in southern Nevada for a while ).
Hey for a few years ( 20+ ) it worked out just fine. Didn't even wear a sweater for the first 5 years!


This was a few days ago, now you can't even see the mountains. Even though we live pretty far up the side of the Organs we never get snow that lasts for more then a few hours if that long, and never sticks around over night, oh yeah right "never say never" ( knock, knock, knock )

Sure it's pretty and all, for a few minutes. ( That had been really working out well for us ; ) )
Right now our water pipes are frozen and my herbs don't look very happy : (
I must say the other morning as I was rushing to the hospital with a kidney stone, the mountains were so beautiful. DH didn't want to stop for a photo, he's so sweet : )

Speaking of DH, he got promoted at work YIPPEE full time hours and health coverage again. It's been a tight year. Still we're fairing better than some, my best and warmest wishes to all of you this cold season.

Cloth # 3 ( all white snowflake cloth )

This is a snowflake pattern, done in knit and purls. A quick, easy knit. High texture for good scrubbing.
I liked the texture so I made one in variegated yarn as well, you can't really see the pattern, but it does clean well : )
DH#1 came up with the pattern in a blink of the eye, he saw me restarting again and took pity on me ( he was already working on a pattern for me as it was lol )
When I got done with this one he liked it well enough, but said he was thinking of the pattern in color. Pattern # 4 coming soon.

Turkey Day

This years dinner went off well. Everyone was in a good mood.
The bird was fall apart tender and moist. Even if it did look a little odd ; )


DS#2 came up with the idea of using whole freshly cut sage leafs on the top of the turkey, looked a little like leaches lol, but came out great, really good flavor.

I've never been much of a baker, DH is a good baker so don't mess with something that's not broke, right... well never having been the type to leave well enough alone. A few nights before turkey day, I tried out a wheat biscuit recipe, as I was running out of time I just spooned it onto the baking sheet instead of rolling and cutting them out.

You know they don't look quite the same, taste fine, but I was told they looked like "puppy swirls". When DH told me that I almost fell over laughing. I had to take a photo of the ones that were left as they were going pretty fast anyhow ; )

The ones we made for Thanksgivings came out much nicer looking lol

Even the homemade pies came out good !!!

A few patterns in the works, just need to put some finishing touches on them. Should be ready soon.

I love good thrift shop finds, 2 white, 2 with gold untouched and 84 yards of red and gold. Less than $4.00 : )

Can/Wrist Covers

I really dislike cold, a soda or beer okay

unless I have to get cold holding it

I've seen patterns out there for years mostly for hot drinks ( I like holding the warm ones ) a few can ones here and there ( I'm sure as soon as I post this I'll see them every where lol )

I had no idea how fun they could be to knit

and useful, not only do they keep your temperature longer ( hot or cold ), you can quickly get a spill. What to do with them in between drinks, put them on your wrists. DS#1 thought they worked great as wrist warmers, and needed a second one.

These are very basic, very quick. Great way to use up smaller amounts of yarn.
About 20 yards of worsted weight cotton yarn.
Size 8 US dpns ( set of 4 ) or magic loop.
Cast on 32 stitches
18 rounds of 2 by 2 ribbing
Bind off in pattern.

I had so much fun making these mostly because they are so quick. DH came up with a few pattern ideas I'm planing on making, as they were a big hit at my sister's birthday party the other night.

Strange how silly little things can be the most asked for gifts. My sister asked if I could make her some more scrubbies for dishes as her Xmas gift lol.

I made her a bath set with a bath sized one for her b-day. She wanted to use it for her dishes : ) She's hooked, I'm sure I can come up with one or two ; )

At her party she asked if I could fix a pair of socks for her as I have for her in the past

There's no toe left!!!!!!
I'll see what I can do, maybe there is enough left to sew a bottom on.....

About this line of cloths

I'm in need of cloths, not fancy, pretty "don't use" type cloths, but "I live with an auto mechanic" type cloths ; )
My guys are the kind who tend to get their fingers dirty ( to say the least ). They don't like to use girlie things, cloths included.
I see naming patterns as the hard part of making them. So these are going to be numbered. Each one will be suited to whatever need be around here. I hope you find some of them if not beautiful, useful.

This cloth was made with my guys in mind. Not fancy or lacy, dark colored to hide stains, with two multi twisted cables to aid scrubbing power. Very easy and quick knit.

Hat & Gloves

I made another hat. This one is for DS#1. I'm still waiting for him to say how he wants his hemp yarn hat patterned , so cotton until he makes up his mind.

Been telling DS#2 for months I'd make him some gloves. He also needed time to make up his mind. He wants very thin, plain gloves, with a long cuff.

I started this one last night. I'm using Hobby Lobby's "I love this yarn" sport weight in black. I must say I do like this yarn, it's very easy to work with.

As I still need a few cloths and such, I've made another one.

I wanted a cloth that would look okay, but mostly work good. I like lacy cloths for foaming bath soap, plain cloths for drying dishes or counter tops.
What about the times when the guys come in from working on who knows what bringing back most of the dirt and grease on them.

This is what I came up with, it does scrub pretty good, the center stitches lather up well and it's dark enough not to show stains ; )

update on door

When DH fixed our door he remade the whole thing frame and all, he did reuse the inside frame of the door, the knob and lock. The rest he put together from things he already had around except the hinges. We had to buy them. Found them on clearance, total cost of our new door that is stronger tighter and all around better less than $3.50 with tax. WOO HOO

Took a few days for everything to get worked out just right. It is a bit heavy and the frame had to be adjusted for it's new weight. It was up that night, we just couldn't open it.

That did not sit well with Buffy. You see that is Buffy's door. It only goes to Buffy's yard, and she thinks she should be in and out every few minutes.

She doesn't like change very much, she will bark at you for a full day after you get a hair cut!

We needed to get her to go out the front door into the front yard then to the gate into her yard. I swear she acted like we were taking her to the gallows. She would not do it. Leashes don't work on her. Her neck is thicker than her head. Her legs are short enough to pop out of harnesses.

Good thing I have strong help around here, over 50 lbs worth of dog who doesn't like being picked up is not easy ; )

but it's done : )

Snow

I was a little disappointed by my shots of snow not showing up on my last post. Lucky for us it didn't stop for most of the night, town stayed dry but we got enough to freeze on the windshield this morning. DS#2 went out with the camera last night a pointed it up. So that's my snow shot ; )

I really should have known

No sooner then I press post it started to snow!!!!!!!!! This is LAS CRUCES in OCTOBER !!!!!!!!!

The sun is setting, it is starting to dip down and they are still working on the door. I'm told they are almost done.

Wouldn't you know it

Last night the wind got a little heavy. This is what used to be our door

It was nice and sunny 2 days ago ; ) Always just before pay day. DH had to take the day off as half the door was still hanging. So just to cover it with that nasty foam rubber, took some doing. We still got most of the pieces, I think DH isn't talking much. He's making a new one, out in the rain. Okay it's a light rain and it is better than snow true, but still I'm damn glad I have him.

This last year non-stop, every day off and after work he was working on van after van for my sister, she's on #3, countless tires, name a part and DH and Dad fixed it. DH gave her one that seems to be holding up except for the tires ( knock, knock )

For 2 weeks now he's been doing things around here, he fixed the dish washer, a light in the bathroom, my fan, the roof of the add-on as well as working on the walls of the add-on. Another year or so and he'll be caught up ; )

In need of cloths and towels plus baby stuff

It has come to my attention ( there's nothing like seeing something hung out on the clothes line ) that we are in need of new cloths and towels. When I first started knitting I made a lot of knit stitch and stockinette cloths in all sizes, those are holding up well, but all the store bought dishcloths and towels are pretty much gone. Yippee, that means I get to use up some of my cotton. I got some really good deals a while back, grab bags and cones, plus some new skeins at thrift shops. I got so much yarn I haven't needed to get any for months.
Oh I did try getting one skein for a baby sweater set. I say try because I had to give it away. I had never had a issue with acrylic yarn of any kind, but this stuff made me itch like crazy. Very upsetting because it was the perfect color for a harvest set.
Funny part is I gave it to Mom, then she goes out and picks up 5 skeins in a real nice purple at the thrive store, for me!  She told Dad they were for me so she can't take them home lol  : )
Turns out I had a good color, not the one I wanted for this, but harvesty enough.

I can post photos of the sweater set now, the baby was born and the set received.

This photo is of Lion Brands pattern for pumpkin hat and booties. I didn't have the right color at this point ( or so I thought, it pays to go through your yarn evey now and then ) but wanted to see how the pattern came together. I had never knit anything for a baby before, and was really not sure how these booties would work out. So this one is just done like a regular hat with no stem or leafs.
 I used Bernats Baby Coordinates in peach, two strains held together through out.
DS#1 saw this and I was told I could and should make a better set.
 It was okay for a hat just not a pumpkin hat. It needed to look more pumpkin like ( no seam on the bottom of the booties either ).  Oh it also needed to have vines.

This is a novelty sweater. I wasn't real sure what to do with the neck I really wasn't planing on making a sweater at all! A week before the baby is due I'm packing it all up ( it was already later then I should has mailed it ) when I hear you can't just mail her a hat and booties.

I pointed out that it was now 2 hats and 2 sets of booties ( what was I going to do with baby stuff  ) and I  also had the real gift, a hooded towel in there.

Nope, no go. If I wanted to be that way, go ahead and ruin it,....... by not sending a sweater.

I have only knit 2 sweaters before, one for a teddy bear and one for me. Both in the same style, knit in one piece with a seam under the arms and sides. Yep that's what I did again. The vines and leafs are knit then sewn on later.

The day I was doing the neck I came across Jeny's bind off ( on knitty's ) and had to give it a go, I did a roll neck line, and seamed it down as it got a little too thick to leave as a roll.

The hooded towel has an angel on the back, DS#1 was kind enough to give me a quick sketch

I made this cloth  illusion witches hat

I had never tried anything in the shaded style, it was fast & easy but a little hard on the eyes with the stripes and all lol

I'm working on a bath mat right now, I don't think I'll have it done in time for Halloween but I'm doing it anyhow, and more wrist warmers to come.
